Spanning across beautifully preserved wetlands and habitats, the SWA Greenway Trail System offers the public a unique opportunity to explore scenic pathways right alongside state-of-the-art recycling and waste-to-energy facilities.
To help bridge the gap between environmental conservation and modern waste management, our team at Wilderness Graphics was thrilled to provide a comprehensive suite of outdoor interpretive signage for the trail system. Here is a look at how we helped tell the story of this innovative public space.
Educating on the Trail: Two Worlds in Harmony
The SWA Greenway Trail System is a masterclass in land stewardship, and the goal of the interpretive signage was to highlight the incredible duality of the site. To bring this environment to life, we fabricated and delivered durable, high-resolution interpretive panels that guide visitors through a variety of educational themes:
The History of Waste: We produced large-scale panels, such as "Waste Through the Ages," which overlooks the water and educates visitors on past waste management practices to show the importance of proper disposal today.
The Science of Sustainability: Specialized signage along the route educates the public on how advanced facilities work, featuring panels like "Imagine 'Away' of the Future," which details advanced metals recovery. Another panel takes visitors on a "Road Trip Through the Benefits of Waste-To-Energy," complete with graphics illustrating how greenhouse gases warm our planet.
A Beneficial Balance: By pairing ecological education with sustainable waste practices, the signs demonstrate how human innovation and environmental protection go hand in hand. Trailside signs explore topics like "Circular Economy in Nature" and "The Everglades and Carbon Sequestration."
Custom Wayside Mounts Built with Recycled Lumber
Florida’s intense sun, heavy afternoon downpours, and high humidity demand outdoor exhibits that are built to last. For the SWA Greenway Trail System, durability and environmental impact were equally important.
In perfect alignment with the Solid Waste Authority's mission of sustainability, all of the mounts and posts for this project were fabricated using recycled lumber. This eco-friendly material not only diverts plastic and wood waste from landfills but also provides incredible, rot-resistant durability against the harsh Florida elements.
To accommodate the different types of information along the trail, we provided several variations of these recycled lumber wayside mounts:
Large Double-Post Kiosks: For the primary educational panels, we utilized large double-post mounts featuring a protective, angled roof structure to shield the graphics.
Large Single-Post Mounts: For secondary trailside education, we installed large single-post mounts that also feature a protective roof.
Small Single-Post Markers: We utilized small, low-profile single-post signs for localized spot identification. These were placed strategically near rest benches, native flora like saw palmettos, and directly along the water's edge.
Natural Finishes: All of the recycled lumber mounts were finished in a natural tan color, allowing the hardware to seamlessly blend into the surrounding native Florida landscape without distracting from the sweeping water views.
