Located in Bushnell, Florida, Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is a site of immense historical significance. Preserving the grounds of the 1835 battle that sparked the Second Seminole War, this 80-acre park offers visitors a chance to step back in time. With ancient live oaks, pine flatwoods, and a recreated breastwork, it provides a quiet, reflective space to learn about Florida’s complex history.
To help welcome and orient the thousands of history enthusiasts and nature lovers who visit the park each year, the park needed a central informational hub. Our team at Wilderness Graphics was tapped to design, engineer, and install a heavy-duty Custom Kiosk Kit tailored specifically for the park's environment.
Here is a look behind the scenes at what goes into engineering and installing a custom structural kiosk for a Florida State Park.
Engineered for the Elements
Florida’s unpredictable weather—ranging from intense summer sun to severe hurricane-force winds—means that standard, off-the-shelf park signage simply won't cut it. A major component of this project was ensuring the new welcome kiosk met strict structural standards.
Working closely with Florida Engineering, our design team produced a structure that fully complies with the 2020 Florida Building Code (7th Edition). To achieve this level of durability, the kiosk’s design required:
Heavy-Duty Framing & Fasteners: Utilizing premium column caps and specialized fasteners to securely anchor the roof and vertical supports.
A Custom Roof Structure: Designed with precise gable overhangs to protect both the interpretive information and the visitors reading it from the harsh Florida sun and rain.
Deep, Reinforced Foundations: To withstand high-wind events, the kiosk relies on a rock-solid foundation.
The Installation Process
A great design is only as good as its installation. Our Wilderness Graphics installation team traveled directly to the site in Bushnell to handle the heavy lifting.
To ensure the kiosk remains a permanent fixture of the park for decades to come, the groundwork had to be flawless. The installation process involved:
-Excavating and setting custom concrete footer forms.
-Building a reinforced steel matrix using rebar boxes and bricks for maximum foundational tensile strength.
-Pouring over 1,600 pounds (20 bags) of 80lb cement on-site to lock the massive structure securely into the Florida soil.
A Welcoming Hub for Visitors
Today, the custom kiosk stands as the perfect starting point for visitors exploring Dade Battlefield Historic State Park. By combining rigorous structural engineering with a beautiful, natural aesthetic that complements the surrounding live oaks, we were able to provide the park with a welcoming informational center that is truly built to last.
Whether visitors are arriving for the annual battle reenactment or simply taking a peaceful hike along the park's scenic trails, this new kiosk ensures they have the maps, history, and safety information they need to start their journey right.
