Located on the beautiful barrier island of Sanibel, Florida, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a world-renowned destination for birders, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. While many visitors flock to the refuge's main Wildlife Drive, the interior Bailey Tract offers a unique, freshwater ecosystem full of its own incredible wildlife and trails.
To help visitors navigate this specialized habitat and understand the delicate ecological balance of Sanibel Island, our team at Wilderness Graphics partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to design, fabricate, and install a complete suite of interpretive signage and welcome kiosks.
Here is a closer look at how we helped tell the story of the Bailey Tract.
Durable Hardware for a Coastal Environment
Florida’s coastal environments are notoriously tough on outdoor exhibits. High humidity, intense UV rays, heavy rains, and salt air mean that interpretive displays must be engineered to last.
To ensure the new trail signs remain vibrant and structurally sound for years to come, we utilized our rugged Pedestal Mounts throughout the Bailey Tract. These low-profile, angled mounts are an industry standard for a reason:
Accessibility: The angled pedestal design presents the interpretive panels at a comfortable reading height for visitors of all ages, including children and individuals using wheelchairs.

In addition to the pedestal mounts along the trails, we also designed and installed a large, multi-panel welcome kiosk with a custom metal roof. This structure serves as the trailhead hub, ensuring visitors are "Prepared for Adventure" with trail maps, safety guidelines, and hydration reminders before they set out.
Telling the Stories of Sanibel Island
The true magic of the Bailey Tract lies in its unique inhabitants and natural processes. We designed and fabricated a series of highly engaging, beautifully illustrated panels mounted on our pedestals to guide visitors through the ecosystem. Key educational themes included:
Rescuing Rats?: Did you know there is a very rare type of rat found only on Sanibel Island? One of our standout panels introduces visitors to the Sanibel Island Rice Rat, a shy, secretive rodent that relies on the refuge’s freshwater wetlands for survival.
Beneficial Burns: To many, fire seems destructive. We designed signage explaining how Sanibel's native landscape has actually adapted to—and thrives through—natural fire ecology and prescribed burns.
Remarkable Reptiles & Precious Pollinators: Visitors can learn about the American Alligators that have patrolled these waters for millions of years, as well as the intricate roles that local pollinators play in sustaining the island's flora.
Birds of the Bailey Tract: True to "Ding" Darling's legacy, specialized signage helps birders identify the diverse waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds that utilize the tract to nest and rest.
