Nestled in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is one of the world's most breathtaking subterranean landscapes. Featuring over 100 known caves, this National Park Service (NPS) site offers visitors an otherworldly experience as they descend into the colossal, stalactite-filled chambers of the Big Room and surrounding passages.
To safely and effectively educate the millions of visitors who explore the caverns, the NPS required specialized, highly durable interpretive displays. The unique subterranean environment, characterized by low light, high humidity, and challenging installation terrain, demanded an innovative approach to exhibit fabrication.
Our team at Wilderness Graphics was honored to take on the challenge. Here’s a look at how we provided custom Wayside Exhibit Mounts to help tell the story of Carlsbad Caverns.
The Challenge: A Subterranean Environment
Designing exhibits for an indoor, underground environment comes with a distinct set of obstacles that standard outdoor wayside mounts don't typically face:
Low Light Levels: The caverns are intentionally kept dim to protect the delicate ecosystem, meaning standard interpretive panels would be nearly impossible to read.
High Humidity & Corrosion: The constant moisture in the cave system can quickly rust standard metals and deteriorate typical sign materials.
Sensitive Terrain: Installation could not disturb the delicate limestone floors or disrupt the natural aesthetic of the cave pathways.
The Solution: Custom Backlit Wayside Exhibit Mounts
To meet these exacting standards, we developed a series of specialized exhibit solutions utilizing our durable Wayside Exhibit Mounts. We customized these structures to ensure they not only survived the cavern environment but thrived in it.
1. Custom LED Illumination
Because natural light is non-existent deep within the caverns, we engineered a custom backlighting system for the interpretive panels. We integrated LED strip lights and remote-controlled dimmers directly into the low-profile mount structures. This ensures the educational text and vibrant graphics are clearly visible to visitors while keeping light pollution to an absolute minimum.

2. Corrosion-Resistant Fabrication
To combat the high humidity, we fabricated the exhibit bases and frames using high-grade, powder-coated aluminum. This rust-proof design guarantees the signs will maintain their structural integrity and visual appeal for years, despite the damp conditions.

3. Low-Profile Rock Shelter Mounts
For sensitive areas like the Rock Shelter, we utilized low-profile pedestal frames that adapt to the uneven terrain. These mounts present information at an accessible, comfortable reading angle without detracting from the sweeping views of the cave formations behind them.
Enhancing the Visitor Journey
From the history of the early cave explorers to the geological science behind the towering stalagmites, the new exhibits at Carlsbad Caverns National Park provide crucial context to an unforgettable journey. By blending rugged, moisture-resistant engineering with custom LED lighting, our Wayside Exhibit Mounts ensure that every visitor can safely read and connect with the stories of the underground.
