Tallahassee, Florida is a city rich in history, culture, and a rapidly growing public art scene. One of the most exciting new community developments is The Stacks at SoMo Walls, a project that transforms towering shipping containers into a larger-than-life canvas for local muralists.
Spearheaded by the Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) and its 2026 Catalyst team, alongside the City of Tallahassee Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and private partners, this project takes visitors on a visual journey through Florida’s wildlife, civic identity, and the vibrant people of Leon County.
When KCCI needed durable, aesthetically appropriate interpretive signage to help visitors identify the artists and stories behind the murals, our team at Wilderness Graphics was thrilled to step in. Here is a look at how we designed and fabricated a custom signage solution to match the gritty, industrial vibe of The Stacks.
Celebrating Tallahassee Through Art
The Stacks is a true community gallery, featuring breathtaking works from local creatives. The interpretive panel we provided serves as the ultimate guide to these masterpieces, allowing visitors to connect deeply with the art.
Custom Fabrication: The Corten Steel Mount
A standard aluminum park sign simply wouldn't fit the aesthetic of a shipping container art installation. The site demanded something rugged, industrial, and seamlessly integrated into the urban environment.
To achieve this, we engineered a completely custom Corten/Weathering Steel Frameless Pedestal Mount.
Industrial Aesthetic: Fabricated from heavy-duty 3/8" thick Corten steel, this specialized mount is designed to naturally oxidize. Over time, it develops a rich, rust-like patina that perfectly complements the corrugated metal of the surrounding shipping containers.
Precision Engineering: We utilized precision laser cutting and press-braked the steel to a 45-degree angle. This provides a low-profile, highly accessible reading angle for visitors of all ages.
Rock-Solid Installation: Our installation team poured a custom 4-inch concrete slab on-site to ensure the 35-inch-tall pedestal remains completely secure and stable in this high-traffic urban space.
High-Resolution, Protected Graphics
To ensure the artists' stories can withstand the elements, we printed the 18" x 11" artwork on our highly durable PermPrint Lite material. This robust material ensures the vibrant panel design—and the logos of the incredible community partners who made it possible—remains crisp and safe from the elements for years to come.
Placemaking Through Partnership
The Stacks at SoMo Walls is a brilliant example of creative placemaking, proving how public spaces can be transformed through community partnership and public art.
