Located in Anahuac, Texas, right in the heart of the Texas Chenier Plain, the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a spectacular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), this beautiful refuge provides essential habitat for migratory birds, reptiles, and local coastal wildlife.
To help enhance the educational journey for visitors, our team at Wilderness Graphics was thrilled to be selected as the MATOC (Multiple-Award Task Order Contract) contractor for a massive Interactive Sign and Exhibit Replacement project across the refuge. From greeting visitors at the front gate to guiding them through the educational breezeway, here is a look at how we updated the refuge’s interpretive displays.
A Grand, Durable Entrance
First impressions are everything for a national wildlife refuge. The original entrance to Jocelyn Nungaray NWR featured an older sandblasted cedar sign that had bravely faced the harsh, humid Texas coastal weather but was showing its age.
To provide a long-lasting, low-maintenance upgrade, we completely replaced the old wooden structure with a brand-new, double-sided HDU (High-Density Urethane) entrance sign. HDU foam mimics the classic, routed look of solid wood but is completely impervious to rot, warping, and insect damage. Carefully painted to match the iconic USFWS branding standards, this new entrance sign guarantees a bold, welcoming presence that will survive the Texas elements for decades.
Engaging Exhibits in the McFaddin Breezeway
Moving into the visitor facilities, our team was tasked with overhauling the educational displays. We designed, fabricated, and installed a comprehensive suite of interpretive panels and custom wallpaper to transform the space into an immersive learning environment. Highlights of the installation include:
The Texas Chenier Plain Panel: A massive exterior entrance panel that grounds visitors in the unique geography and ecological importance of the surrounding landscape.

McFaddin Breezeway Panels: We installed a series of vibrant, high-resolution panels covering local biodiversity. These exhibits explore the intricate "Tapestry of Habitats" found within the refuge, helping visitors identify everything from the iconic Blue Crab to local reptiles and amphibians.

Custom Tri-Kiosks: To provide centralized, accessible information hubs, we engineered and installed custom multi-sided kiosks that welcome guests, display refuge rules, and highlight ways the public can "Support Wildlife."

Built for the Coastal Climate
Working in a coastal Texas environment means designing for high humidity, intense sun, and salt air. Throughout the Jocelyn Nungaray NWR project, we utilized rugged wayside exhibit hardware, weather-resistant laminates, and our heavy-duty PermPrint graphics. This ensures that every map, photograph, and piece of educational text remains vibrant and protected against fading and moisture.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Conservationists
By combining durable HDU fabrication for the main entrance with high-resolution, engaging interpretive panels throughout the visitor areas, we provided the USFWS with a comprehensive exhibit upgrade. The new signage at Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge not only looks fantastic but serves as a vital educational tool, connecting the public to the incredible wildlife of the Texas Gulf Coast.
