When modern infrastructure projects intersect with historical landscapes, it creates a unique opportunity to educate the public about the people and cultures that came before us. In Grant County, Minnesota, recent improvements along County State-Aid Highway 10 (CSAH 10) brought this exact opportunity to light.
To help share the region's rich archaeological and cultural history with the community, our team at Wilderness Graphics partnered with the Grant County Highway Department to design, fabricate, and deliver a completely custom outdoor interpretive kiosk.
Here is a look at how we engineered a durable, weather-resistant exhibit to tell the deep, vibrant story of Minnesota's past.
Educating by the Roadside: The Story of the Land
The primary goal of this project was to connect visitors and residents with the rich history beneath their feet. To achieve this, we manufactured two high-resolution, 36" x 24" interpretive panels that take readers on a journey through time. The educational themes included:
What is Archaeology?: A detailed look at how scientific methods—like pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, and excavation units—uncover the physical traces of the past along Highway 10.
A Living Cultural Landscape: The signage highlights the deep connections of the Dakota and Cheyenne people to this land. By examining unearthed artifacts like projectile points, ancient pottery, and animal bones (including bison, turtle, and waterfowl), the panels tell the story of how these communities thrived and adapted over generations.
A Comprehensive Timeline: Visitors can explore a historical timeline that places local events—from the early Archaic period and the 1851 Treaties to the US-Dakota War and modern cultural revitalization—into a broader global context.
To ensure these vital stories remain vibrant and legible through intense Minnesota summers and freezing, snowy winters, we printed the graphics on our highly durable PermPrint material. These rugged signs are practically impervious to fading, scratching, and moisture.
Custom Fabrication: Built for the Minnesota Elements
A standard park sign wouldn't provide the presence or protection needed for this roadside installation. We engineered and fabricated a completely custom, heavy-duty aluminum mounting structure tailored specifically to the site's needs.
Robust Aluminum Framework: Our team constructed a massive custom kiosk standing over 7 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The structure provides a rock-solid foundation that won't warp or rust, securely anchored using heavy-duty base plates.

Custom Powder Coating & Roofing: To protect the metalwork and seamlessly blend into the natural environment, the entire structural frame was finished in a weather-resistant Brown powder coat. We also integrated a custom Cocoa Brown metal roof (utilizing premium ultra-rib panels and drip edges) with precise overhangs to shield the interpretive panels from rain and snow.
A Lasting Educational Resource
By combining heavy-duty welded frames, a protective metal roof, and weather-resistant PermPrint graphics, we provided Grant County with a striking informational hub that requires virtually no maintenance. Whether visitors are stopping to take in the views or locals are learning about the rich Dakota and Cheyenne history of their home, this custom kiosk ensures the past remains a visible, vibrant part of the modern landscape.
