Located near Cayuga, North Dakota, the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) protects a beautiful slice of the northern tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Covering over 8,300 acres of vital prairie grasslands and wetlands, this U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) property serves as an essential haven for migratory birds, local wildlife, and nature enthusiasts.
When the refuge needed a durable, welcoming central information hub for the Sprague Lake and Tewaukon Units, our team at Wilderness Graphics was thrilled to design, fabricate, and deliver a completely custom kiosk and signage solution.
Here is a look at how we engineered an outdoor exhibit built to survive the rugged North Dakota climate while beautifully telling the story of the refuge.
Educating on the Prairie: Custom Interpretive Panels
The primary goal of this project was to orient guests as they arrive and educate them on the ecological importance of the tallgrass prairie. To achieve this, our design team developed four unique, high-resolution interpretive panels. The educational themes included:
A Refuge for Migratory Birds and People: A welcoming introductory panel detailing why the refuge’s wetlands are so crucial for resting and nesting waterfowl.
Navigating the Landscape: A highly detailed "Sprague Lake and Tewaukon Units" panel featuring custom maps to help visitors safely explore the 8,343 acres of grasslands.
The Bigger Picture: A centralized panel explaining the mission of the broader National Wildlife Refuge System as "Places for Wildlife, Places for People."
To ensure these graphics remain vibrant and legible through intense summer sun and freezing winter snow, we utilized highly durable ImageLoc panel technology. These rugged graphics are practically impervious to fading, scratching, and moisture.
Heavy-Duty Fabrication: The Double-Arched Mount
A standard park sign wouldn't stand up to the extreme weather conditions of the open North Dakota prairie. We engineered and fabricated a completely custom mounting structure tailored specifically to the site's needs.

Robust Framework: Working with our metal fabrication partners, we constructed a massive 96-inch-wide double-arched sign frame. Welded from heavy-duty 2"x1" rectangular metal tubing, the structure provides a rock-solid foundation that won't warp or bend in high winds.
Custom Powder Coating: To protect the metalwork from rust and corrosion, the entire structural frame was finished in a brilliant, weather-resistant blue powder coat.
Integrated Wayfinding: To ensure visitors have all the resources they need for a safe hike, we also engineered and installed a heavy-duty, weatherproof brochure box directly onto the post-mounted structure.
Built for the Long Haul
By combining heavy-duty welded frames, durable powder-coated finishes, and weather-resistant ImageLoc graphics, we provided the USFWS with a striking informational hub that requires virtually no maintenance. Whether visitors are arriving to birdwatch in the spring or explore the prairie in the fall, this custom kiosk ensures they receive a warm, educational welcome to the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge.
